Favorite Charity?

In a relatively recent post on The News and Observer, Raleigh’s newspaper, Sue Stock wrote about her favorite charity–Raleigh Moravian Church’s Flower Shuttle.

Begun by one of our members, and hosted in our facility, The Flower Shuttle is associated with RMC, but is now mostly run by volunteers from the community.  The Flower Shuttle is a great group of volunteers who show up in our Fellowship Hall each Tuesday morning (except the weeks of major holidays), and rearrange flowers to form new arrangements for local nursing homes, cancer centers, and hospitals.  They take in donations from events, galas, and celebrations in the community.  They also collect from local grocery stores and florists who have flowers they can no longer sell, but still have some beauty left in them.   Since they began in 2006,  they’ve arranged over 66,000 arrangements, and that number grows each week!

It’s a remarkable experience to see so many people here helping, seeing the flowers that arrive, and the arrangements that leave hear each week. It’s a win-win situation, and it’s fun!  If you’re ever in Raleigh on a Tuesday from 9-noon-ish, stop by to watch, and you may even want to bring your camera!  They will likely put you to work too–don’t say I didn’t warn you 😉

What’s your favorite charity and why?
