Lent: Day 8

Ok, so this may be silly, but it was not insignificant to me.  I love Bruegger’s Bagels and my favorite bagel variety are their pretzel bagels. They are a limited item, so they come and go occasionally over the course of the year.  Thursday I happened to stop in the new Bruegger’s on Six Forks Road in North Hills.  I hadn’t been in this location before, and I was headed to a meeting on that side of town, so I stopped by.  Well, they had pretzel bagels.  I was overjoyed.

Why you might ask, do I like them so much, and how can this possibly be a holy moment? Good questions!  I think they taste good, first of all.  But more importantly they remind me of my semester in Germany.  There was a bakery that I walked by each day on my way to class.  I would often stop there for breakfast and order a Brezlenbrot mit butter (pretzel bread with butter).  It was a pretzel roll, cut in half with butter inside.  It was heavenly, and it is hard to find in the US.

Whenever I think about my semester in Germany, I think about all the times God answered my prayers, all the times I saw God at work, and the amazing journey I had there.  My calling to ministry really began while I was abroad, so it is a place and time I hold very dear.  I always enjoy little reminders of this special place and time, and Bruegger’s Pretzel bagels take me back to Heidelberg, if even for a few moments.  It was a holy time, so maybe these bagels are mini-holy moments… even while they are holey, lol.
