Conspire Magazine Photo

I enjoy reading Conspire Magazine.  It’s a way to build relationships with those living in the ways of Jesus and serves as a conversation among intentional Christian Communities around the USA and the world.  The most recent issue is all about the theme: “Walls and Borders: Setting the Captives Free.” On their website in the Fall I saw the upcoming theme and had a photo I wanted to submit for possible use around this theme.  I was excited in December to learn it had been chosen for publication.  I received the Magazine this week and wanted to post the photo here.  I took a few at different angles, but these are the two that turned out best.

It was taken in the field next to the house where we served during Mission Camp at Laurel Ridge this past July.  There were cows grazing at the one morning when we showed up, and I walked over to get some up close shots of the cows.  Then I noticed the purple thistle growing at the base of the fence.  I loved the contrast of the beautiful thistle, with the thistle’s thorns, and then contrasting that against the barbed wire fence.  I found a cross within the fence, and framed it all together.  There was a white shed in the field that you can see off in the background.  It came together well and I was pleased to have found the shot.

I often use photography as a spiritual discipline.  There is a way I notice the world when I’m out on a “photo shoot”.  I stop and notice details.  I see a beauty in creation that I often pass by when I’m not behind the camera.  I love being behind the camera and capturing just the shot I want that shows the beauty and creativity of God’s creation.

I also wanted to include a few of the cow, which was my original subject that day I captured this photo. Others included in the slideshow are from later that day when we were working on the job site and then spending time at camp in the evening.
